The UMNO hidden hand in Selangor crisis

August 30, 2014

The Pakatan Rakyat debacle in Selangor has finally exposed the hidden hands of UMNO using the palace and the UMNO rough supporters within Pakatan Rakyat. The Palace’s   unconventional request for 2 names to be submitted by each component parties in Pakatan Rakyat is unprecedented. The constitutional monarch has no jurisdiction in appointing the Menteri Besar other than the one who commands the majority support in state assembly. The Sultan nor his royal office are new to Mentri Besar crisis. Yet there are elements close to palace dictating to Pakatan Rakyat component parties what the sultan wants. UMNO the puppet master behind the scene is pulling the strings using the palace to prolong the crisis to finally form an alternate unity government with defections from PAS and PKR.

The revelation that PAS president was the actually Trojan horse promoting UMNO interest in forming new unity government without going back to voters, indicates the direction and target of UMNO in Selangor crisis. UMNO through PAS president is plotting the ‘Perak like defection’ to form a new government. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib knows pretty well that if there is a snap election UMNO and BN has no chance of returning to power. The other way of taking power without going to people is defection from Pakatan Rakyat. But Pakatan Rakyat has 43 assembly members compared to 13 on UMNO side. It is an uphill task unless PAS members defect. But too much water has flowed below the bridge for the entire 13 PAS assembly men to defect. Pakatan Rakyat has 30 assembly members in its side against UMNOs 26.

Selangor is the jewel in the Malaysian political crown. UMNO feels it is worth the while doing the unethical and illegal political defection attempt. But now that their plans are slowly becoming apparent and having their hand soiled this far can they retrieve without achieving anything. That must be embarrassing and they could become more desperate. In Perak they were successful because of 2 member difference but in Selangor it is a different ball game all together.

Datin Sri Dr Wan Azizah received her early education in St. Nicholas Convent School, Alor Setar. She continued her education at Tunku Kurshiah College in Seremban before she went on to study medicine at the Royal of surgeons in Ireland where was awarded a gold medal in obstetrics and gynecology and she later graduated as a qualified ophthalmologist.

Dr. Wan Azizah served as a government doctor for 14 years before deciding to focus on volunteering work, when her husband, Anwar Ibrahim was appointed the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia in1993. As part of her voluntary pursuits, she became a patron of MAKNA (majlis Kanser Nasional in that period and became the second woman to lead a political party in Malaysia’s history. Ganga Nayar founded and became the first president of the Malaysian workers’ party in 1978.

To say that she will be remotely controlled by her husband is a political irony and belittling the effort of promoting a woman into the forefront of politics in Malaysia. A woman who also happens to be the wife of Datuk Sri Anwar Ibrahim hounds UMNO and their allies into fabricating excuses blocking the Pakatan Rakyat candidature. Selangor crisis may not end soon.

UMNO will create more mess and confusion with the tacit support of main stream media and divert the blame to Pakatan Rakyat. The Prime Minister has already expressed his support for outgoing MB Khalid Ibrahim and disapproval for a new woman MB who has the majority support in state assembly. The Palace churns constitutional crisis to serve the UMNO purpose. The deputy PM Tan Sri Muhiddin Yassin has reaffirmed that BN state assemblymen will stand with Khalid all the way. UMNO had successfully dwarfed the Kajang move to replace khalid and the pro-UMNO faction in PAS are still supporting him.

UMNO the puppet master has made the constitution irrelevant in Selangor crisis. Selangor voters have made their choice loud and clear and it is up to the federal government and Palace to accept and respect the choice. The ball is in UMNO’s court.

Gender inequality, heart of Selangor woes

August 30, 2014

The impasse in appointing Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as menteri besar in Selangor, a first in Malaysia, if it becomes a reality, puts on record the unwritten repressive gender bias against women in our own backyard.

The reluctance of PAS to support PKR’s nominee Dr Wan Azizah, despite having the support of 30 assembly members versus 26 from Umno and PAS, clearly shows their bias against women and the gender inequality they practice.

And this, unexpected turnaround came after the Pakatan coalition had verbally endorsed her and decided on her candidacy for the Menteri Besar’s post.

It is puzzling that PAS president (Datuk Seri Haji Abdul Hadi Awang) admitted that the sultan did not rule out a women MB candidate to date.

The question then is, why is PAS bending backwards to block the first ever woman Mentri Besar?

Earlier, in the Selangor crisis, state PAS deputy commissioner (Abdul Rani Osman) pointed to palace for turning down a woman candidate.

But after Pakatan Rakyat had unanimously decided on Dr Wan Azizah, PAS back tracked and proposed other male candidates from their own ranks and PKR.

This duplicity shows that PAS is a male dominated religious party that practices discrimination against women.

To compliment PAS, Umno legal advisor Datuk Mohd Hafarizam Harun came out with an absurd remark that menstruating women should be disqualified to become a MB.

Women are a dominant force in higher education, the workforce and are playing a more central role in society.

But chauvinist political leaders in PAS and Umno have not reconciled with the reality on the ground and have insulated themselves with a narrow, outdated religious worldview.

Even when Dyna Sofea contested under the DAP ticket in Teluk Intan, Umno leaders were spewing sexist remarks that belittled the dignity and integrity of women.

Our neighbors, Thailand, Phillipines and Indonesia all had women head of states. Indonesia, the largest Muslim country, had Megawati Sukarno Putri as president. But, in sharp contrast, in Malaysia, nominating a woman MB faces opposition from conservative Muslim parties.

Even Pakistan and Bangladesh had woman heads. Only the Arab states prohibit woman’s participation in politics and deprive them of rights. Malaysia is fast following the Arab model and not the other non-Arab Muslim countries where women are given equality.

The Selangor palace can set right women’s position and uphold their dignity by one swift move. PAS and Umno, find it hard to reconcile a woman’s role in family, society and politics and this remains a stumbling block for women in Malaysia.

Gender equality is the cornerstone of every democratic society which aspires to social justice and human rights.

Discrimination of gender in this 21st century is oumoded and cannot be tolerated and swept under the carpet.

It is perpetuated by ignorant stereotypes, superstitions and traditional beliefs that aims at subjugating women and keeping them in their traditional but outdated positins at home.

Deriding other religious practice is seditious and disharmonious

August 1, 2014

The Islamic preacher, Ustaz shahul hamid, who insulted Hindism in a speech at a surau in Shah Alam should be arrested by Police for creating religious disharmony among Malaysians. His speech smacked with bad intention, ignorance of other religions and deceitfulness. The police should have no excuse not to arrest him. It is bogus religious preachers like Shahul Hamid who bring bad reputation for their own religion. As a preacher of the official religion why cast unwanted aspersion on the minority religion which is no threat at all. The degrading and false belittling of the minority religion by Shahul Hamid shows his lack of knowledge of religions and their purpose to humankind.

Preachers who speak ill of other religions should be banned. Multi-racial and multi religious countries like Malaysia are certainly better off without this kind of half-baked preachers who instead of propagating the good values and practice of their own religion bad mouth and mocked the practices other religions.

Shahul Hamid must be foolish to suggest that a statue placed at the entrance to taste the spice leaving the factory. This is utter lie for it has no scientific evidence to support his claim. Then why did Shahul Hamid make such a false claim. The only logical reason could be to run down other religious practice and to ruin the business of these two spice producers.

Religious leaders are welcomed in society to lead the masses from darkness to light. They disseminate knowledge on righteous way of life. They built bridges between different communities to live in harmony. Preachers like Shahul Hamid do not belong anywhere near this category.

Preachers and Priests become famous by enlightening the masses and disseminating good values that make the society progressive and tolerant but Shahul Hamid finds fault in other religions to make him more popular. He derided the symbols of other religion without knowing anything about other religion. Shahul hamid’s preaching does not bring any good to Malaysia or its people. Police must be proactive and nip speaking ill of other religions in the bud itself.

If this guy is a member of PAS, the party must sack him to send a strong message that PAS is for all and not for bigots and narrow mindedness. Otherwise the claim is shallow and they don’t mean it. One bad apple should not tarnish the good name of the party.

Police should not be confused on acting tough on such disharmonious tendencies. Malaysia if truly Asia why no action on Shahul Hamid?
